Temporal encephaloceles in epilepsy patients and asymptomatic cases: Size may indicate epileptogenicity

چکیده

Objective This study was undertaken to identify temporal encephaloceles (TEs) and examine their characteristics in patients with lobe epilepsy (TLE) extratemporal (ETLE), as well asymptomatic cases. Methods Four hundred fifty-eight magnetic resonance imaging scans were examined retrospectively TE 157 TLE, 150 ETLE, 151 healthy controls (HCs). Results At least one identified 9.6% of the TLE (n = 15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 5.3%–15.3%), 3.3% ETLE 5, CI 1.1%–7.6%), 2.0% HCs 3, .4%–5.7%), indicating a significantly higher frequency compared HC subjects (p .027, p .005). Examining TEs both patients, we found that diameter less than 6.25 mm more likely be asymptomatic, sensitivity 91.7% specificity 73.3% (area under curve .867, .723–1.00, .001). Significance Temporal may occur without presenting any clinical symptoms. Patients show groups. According our study, size could used suggest potential epileptogenicity.

Temporal Cortex Morphology in Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Patients and Their Asymptomatic Siblings.

Temporal cortex abnormalities are common in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy due to hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE+HS) and believed to be relevant to the underlying mechanisms. In the present study, we set out to determine the familiarity of temporal cortex morphologic alterations in a cohort of MTLE+HS patients and their asymptomatic siblings. A surface-based morphometry (SBM) method w...

[The neuropathology of temporal lobe epilepsy: primary and secondary changes in the cortical circuits and epileptogenicity].

INTRODUCTION Temporal lobe epilepsy is associated to many disorders localized to the neocortex, the hippocampal formation or both (dual pathology). The most common pathologies are mesial sclerosis, tumours, malformations and scars. However, these alterations are not intrinsically epileptogenic, as they are also seen in patients who do not develop epilepsy. Thus, the cortical tissue in the damag...

Epileptogenicity of brain structures in human temporal lobe epilepsy: a quantified study from intracerebral EEG.

The identification of brain regions generating seizures ('epileptogenic zone', EZ) in patients with refractory partial epilepsy is crucial prior to surgery. During pre-surgical evaluation, this identification can be performed from the analysis of intracerebral EEG. In particular, the presence of high-frequency oscillations, often referred to as 'rapid discharges', has long been recognized as a ...

How epileptogenic are temporal encephaloceles?

Encephaloceles are spontaneous or acquired abnormal herniations of the brain into congenital or acquired osseous-dural defects of the skull base or cranial vault. When located in the middle fossa, they may present with medically intractable epilepsy, recurrent meningitis, CSF fistulas, middle ear fluid, or unilateral hearing loss. Bony deficits may involve either the body or the greater wing of...

Emotion Processing in Patients with Early- and Late-Onset Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Objective: Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) can contribute to various emotional symptoms by damaging the temporal lobe. This study aimed at investigating emotion processing in patients with early- and late-onset TLE compared to a healthy group. Methods: In this causal-comparative study, 60 patients with diagnosed TLE were compared to 60 healthy controls to identify emotion processing styles. The d...
